During the Great War 1914-1918 the role of the services played a significant part in the defence of Sussex , the people and places contributed much to the War effort.

Much of the military and especially the social of the history of this period has been forgotten, as we head for nearly 100 years since the start of the Great War .

During the First World War enemy aliens were assessed by Internment Tribunal Boards and internment camps were established within the United Kingdom. Very few records of individual internees survive for the First World War.

All were in work camps, working on the land, farming, forestry, some in building trades. Did you know there was a camp in Lancing/ Sompting, Brooker Hall Hove, Christ Hospital Horsham, Shoreham, plus many others?

Pattishall  Towcester, Northants, Main German Prison Camp.

It was from this camp that all German prisoners were assigned to work camps in the South of England, others were posted to other camps in various locations throughout England.

On this site i am only dealing with camps in Sussex, East and West. Below German prisoner at Pattishall Camp 1917/18.
